KEENE, N.H. (MyKeeneNow) The City of Keene has once again been recognized for its long-standing investment in trees and green infrastructure, earning a 2025 Tree City USA designation from the Arbor Day Foundation.
The annual designation highlights communities that actively manage and expand their tree canopy, a priority city officials say remains central to Keene’s long-term sustainability efforts. The recognition comes during a milestone year for the Tree City USA program, which is marking its 50th anniversary.
Keene has maintained its status in the program for many years, reflecting consistent work to preserve and enhance its urban forest. City Manager Elizabeth Ferland said the designation reinforces the city’s focus on maintaining a healthy tree canopy as part of broader environmental goals.
Communities receiving the Tree City USA title must meet a set of national standards, including maintaining a tree board or department, adopting a public tree ordinance, investing in forestry efforts, and holding an annual Arbor Day observance.
Officials and environmental advocates note that urban trees do more than beautify neighborhoods. A well-maintained canopy can help cool city streets, reduce stormwater runoff, improve air quality, and even lower energy costs for residents. Trees have also been linked to improved mental and physical health, along with increased property values.
The Arbor Day Foundation, which works with partners including the National Association of State Foresters and the U.S. Forest Service, supports communities around the world in planting and caring for trees. Since its founding, the organization and its partners have planted hundreds of millions of trees across more than 60 countries.
Keene’s continued participation in the program places it among a network of communities nationwide working to strengthen environmental resilience through urban forestry initiatives.
