KEENE, N.H. (MyKeeneNow) Some Keene residents on the city’s east side may have noticed a strong chlorine smell in their tap water Tuesday after a higher-than-usual concentration entered the municipal water system late in the morning.

According to the city’s Public Works Department, the issue began around 11:45 a.m. when water containing elevated chlorine levels was released from one of the city’s storage tanks. Crews quickly began flushing hydrants in the affected area to dilute the water and restore normal conditions.

By early afternoon, chlorine levels had stabilized and returned to the state’s acceptable range, officials said. The New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services was notified of the incident.

While the water remains safe to drink, residents may still experience a temporary chlorine odor or taste. In some cases, officials said, the higher concentration could cause mild skin irritation. Anyone noticing a strong chlorine smell or taste is advised to run cold water until the odor fades.

City officials thanked residents for their patience while crews addressed the problem. Those with questions can contact the Keene Public Works Department at 352-6550.
