(MyKeeneNow) A recent community survey on potential hazards in Keene has revealed that residents are most concerned about flooding, extreme weather events, and infrastructure vulnerabilities. The survey, conducted through FlashVote, gathered 262 responses and has provided valuable insight for city officials as they plan for emergency preparedness and disaster response.

Top Concerns: Flooding, Extreme Weather, and Power Outages

When asked about the natural disasters that pose the greatest threat to Keene, heavy rain, flooding, and landslides were the most cited concerns, with 180 respondents selecting this option. Other frequently mentioned hazards included heavy snow or ice storms (140), extreme winds from hurricanes or tornadoes (116), and severe droughts (88). Earthquakes, however, were the least concerning, with only three respondents highlighting them as a priority.

Beyond natural disasters, residents also expressed concern over infrastructure failures and public safety threats. The most pressing issue was the risk of extended power outages, which received 153 votes. Public health emergencies (114 votes) and extended water or sewer outages (95 votes) were also key worries. Meanwhile, 59 respondents indicated concern about mass shootings or bombings.

Preferred Methods for Emergency Alerts

In terms of communication during a disaster, residents overwhelmingly preferred text messages (205 votes) as the most effective way to receive emergency updates. Other favored methods included email (133), automated phone calls (119), and radio news reports (96). Social media and television news were less preferred, with 74 and 44 votes respectively.

Calls for Better Preparedness

Survey participants provided numerous comments on how Keene could improve its readiness for future disasters. Many respondents called for better flood mitigation efforts, emergency exit route signage, and investment in emergency shelters. Other recommendations included:

  • Increased lighting on downtown sidewalks to improve safety.
  • More robust communication strategies to inform the public about potential hazards and preparedness plans.
  • Stronger enforcement of building codes to reduce fire risks and structural vulnerabilities.
  • Greater investment in emergency response personnel and medical services to ensure adequate staffing in times of crisis.
  • Community-led preparedness initiatives, such as emergency supply workshops and active shooter response training.

Concerns were also raised about the impact of climate change on Keene, with some residents urging the city to prioritize green infrastructure to mitigate flooding and consider long-term solutions for water security.

City officials will use the survey results to inform future planning efforts.
