KEENE, N.H. (MyKeeneNow) An adult male was shot and killed Tuesday evening following a prolonged interaction with law enforcement in Keene, the New Hampshire Attorney General’s Office confirmed.
Attorney General John M. Formella said no law officers were physically injured, and there is no known threat to the public.
The shooting ended a tense standoff that began Tuesday afternoon in the TD Bank parking lot on West Street.
Police had closed West Street from Island Street to Colorado Street and restricted traffic around Gilbo Avenue after a 911 call at about 3 p.m. reported at least one person inside a silver sedan with a weapon.
Keene Police’s armored BearCat vehicle was positioned in front of the sedan, with an officer on top aiming a firearm. Negotiators repeatedly called the man inside by his first name, telling him they wanted him to come out safely. A K-9 unit was also nearby.
Around 4 p.m., Keene police posted on Facebook asking the public to avoid the area, describing the scene as “active but under control.”
By 4:15 p.m., officers carrying long guns were moving between the sedan and other positions. Onlookers gathered behind barricades across the street near Gilbo Avenue.
At about 5:15 p.m., a woman exited the sedan and was escorted away by police. The man remained inside, speaking with officers. By 6 p.m., more cruisers and emergency vehicles arrived, tightening the perimeter as negotiations continued.
Bystanders reported hearing gunfire shortly before 8 p.m., at which point the standoff ended. Authorities have not yet said what prompted the incident.
The names of the officers involved are being withheld until formal interviews are completed, and the exact circumstances remain under active investigation.
The Attorney General’s Office is leading the investigation and will release additional details when available.
