KEENE, N.H. (MyKeeneNow.com) The City of Keene’s property tax rate saw a moderate rise compared to last year. Determined by the New Hampshire Department of Revenue Administration, they review all budget appropriations approved by the city, county and schools and all revenues expected. They then use a mathematical equation to determine the property tax rate per $1,000 of property value.

This year’s property tax rate has been set at $34.37, according to the City’s website. This is a $1.30 increase from last year when it was $33.07. During this time period, the estimated total assessed value of Keene actually decreased by $2 million.

The biggest gain in tax rate is from the local education rate, which rose 77 cents from $15.16 to $15.93. Preliminary School District budget figures estimated that Keene’s property tax rate for local education could rise 17 percent – it actually ended up being over 19 percent.

Other areas saw smaller gains, with the municipal tax rate rising 30 cents, the county rate rising 19 cents, and the state education rate seeing the smallest gain of four cents.

This new tax rate makes Keene have the second highest property tax rate in the state, only behind Charlestown which saw their tax rate end up at $36.54. Other towns in Cheshire County that are near Keene’s rate are Hinsdale, which ended up at $31.19, Westmoreland, who’s tax rate is $25.92, and Marlborough, where the tax rate increased to $31.24.
