STODDARD, N.H. (MyKeeneNow) A lightning bolt ripped through the roof of a Route 9 home in Stoddard Wednesday, sparking a fire that gutted the building and sent one firefighter to the hospital.
Fire crews were called just after 4 p.m. to find smoke and flames pouring from the attic. Mutual aid from Peterborough, Hancock, Antrim, Nelson, and Hillsboro helped bring the blaze under control within two hours. But the fire reignited shortly after 7 p.m., forcing crews to return for an extensive overhaul.
One firefighter suffered heat exhaustion and was treated and released later that evening.
The owners were out of town when the lightning struck. They returned from vacation Wednesday night to find their home badly damaged and uninhabitable. A GoFundMe campaign has since been launched to help them recover, raising more than $4,000 toward a $12,000 goal.
