SPOFFORD, N.H. (MyKeeneNow) – Bayard Tracy, a long-time resident of Spofford, has been recognized by U.S. Senator Maggie Hassan as August’s Granite Stater of the Month. Tracy, who has been an active volunteer with the Spofford Lake Association for nearly two decades, has played a pivotal role in preserving the lake’s water quality and ensuring its enjoyment for future generations.
Tracy’s involvement with the Spofford Lake Association began shortly after he moved to the area in 2006. He initially contributed to water testing efforts, which soon expanded to include securing grants and spearheading studies aimed at understanding and improving the lake’s environmental health. His work led to the development of a comprehensive, multi-year water management plan designed to address issues like stormwater runoff, the primary source of phosphorus and other pollutants entering the lake.
Tracy’s commitment to lake conservation has not been limited to technical efforts. He has also focused on community engagement, leading initiatives to raise awareness among local residents about the importance of protecting Spofford Lake. By encouraging individual landowners to take action to prevent erosion and runoff from their properties, Tracy has helped foster a sense of shared responsibility within the community.
His efforts have resulted in tangible changes, including the establishment of a Watershed Committee by the town of Chesterfield, the creation of a wastewater management ordinance for the Lake District, and the creation of a fund to protect the lake from potential invasive species infestations. These measures are designed to ensure that Spofford Lake remains a safe and enjoyable destination for activities such as swimming, boating, and fishing.
Tracy’s recognition as August’s Granite Stater of the Month highlights his enduring contributions to the community and serves as a reminder of the importance of local conservation efforts.
