KEENE, N.H. (MyKeeneNow) – A man accused of killing the mother of his two children and prompting an Amber Alert ending in Keene has been indicted on murder charges.
The indictment accuses Dustin Mark Duren, 37, of shooting Kaitlyn Naffziger, 31, while he was holding one of their children. He’s charged with first-degree murder, reckless second-degree murder, reckless conduct with a deadly weapon, and endangering the welfare of a child.
New Hampshire State Police issued an Amber Alert in the early morning hours on March 1st for Elowyn Duren, 4, and Vaelyn Duren, 1, who were believed to be with their father, Dustin Mark Duren, who was believed to be armed and dangerous.
The alert was issued after the girls’ mother, identified as Naffziger, was found dead in an apartment on Main Street in Berlin, New Hampshire the night before.
The Keene Police Department received a tip later that morning that the vehicle from the Amber Alert was located in the Applebee’s parking lot on Key Road in Keene. KPD and New Hampshire State police responded and took Duren into custody. The two girls were evaluated by Keene fire/EMS and were uninjured.
An autopsy determined Naffziger died of a single gunshot wound to the head. Assistant Attorney General Bethany Durand said in a news conference in Keene that March evening that Duren was in a relationship with Naffziger, and they were co-parenting the two girls. Durand said at that point Duren had been charged with second degree murder in Naffziger’s death.
He was held without bail in the Cheshire County House of Corrections pending a probable cause hearing in Berlin District Court, which he was transported for to appear in person.
