WALPOLE, N.H. (MyKeeneNow) Police have released additional details about the shooting that prompted a large emergency response Wednesday morning on Main Street, confirming one man was arrested and another was hospitalized with a gunshot wound.
According to Walpole police, the incident occurred shortly before 11 a.m. in the parking lot of the Jiffy Mart convenience store and gas station. Investigators say the shooting did not take place inside the business, and there was no damage to the building.
The victim, an adult male and Walpole resident, was struck once in the torso. He was initially transported by ambulance to Cheshire Medical Center in Keene before being flown by medical helicopter to Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon for further treatment. His current condition has not been released.
An adult male suspect was taken into custody at the scene without incident, police said. Authorities have not released the names of those involved.
Walpole Police Chief Justin Sanctuary said the shooting appears to have been an isolated event and emphasized that there was no ongoing threat to the public. Investigators are exploring whether the confrontation may have originated from a motor vehicle-related incident along Route 12 prior to the shooting.
The Jiffy Mart remained closed for the remainder of the day as police processed the scene. New Hampshire State Police are assisting Walpole police with the investigation.
Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has information related to the events leading up to the shooting to contact the Walpole Police Department. Officials said additional information will be released as it becomes available.
The investigation remains ongoing.
