ROCKINGHAM, VT (MyKeeneNow) A major multi-vehicle accident on Interstate 91 northbound near mile marker 33.6 in Rockingham prompted authorities to declare a Mass Casualty Incident (MCI) this morning, leading to a highway shutdown at Exit 5 and a significant emergency response effort.
The crash, reported around 9:50 a.m., involved approximately 10 vehicles, including at least one rollover and two individuals trapped inside a vehicle. Emergency responders worked swiftly to extricate the trapped victims, and additional four ambulances were requested to assist with the response.
Due to the severity of the crash, I-91 northbound was completely closed at Exit 5, with the southbound lanes temporarily shut down south of Exit 6 to allow helicopters to land for medical evacuations. Two DHART helicopters were dispatched to transport critically injured patients.
Rescue teams from Bellows Falls, Westminster, Walpole, Chester, and Springfield were on the scene, along with multiple ambulances from Golden Cross, Rescue Inc., and other agencies.
Authorities have urged motorists to avoid the area and seek alternate routes as the highway remains closed. Crews are working to reopen at least one travel lane, but there is no estimated time for full clearance.
Further details, including the number of injuries and the cause of the crash, have not yet been released. Updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
