MANCHESTER, N.H. (MyKeeneNow) A game-saving diving catch and a gutsy complete-game performance lifted Monadnock to a 2-1 victory over Bishop Brady in the NHIAA Division III baseball championship on Saturday, securing the program’s fourth title in five years.
Tied 1-1 in the fifth inning with two runners on and two outs, a hard-hit liner down the left field line threatened to break the game open for Bishop Brady. But Monadnock senior left fielder Chase Elliott raced to the foul line and made a full-extension diving catch, robbing extra bases and halting Brady’s momentum.
Monadnock took the lead an inning later. With Nick Ball on second after a walk and stolen base, Koby Kidney’s fly ball to shallow right dropped between defenders after a collision, allowing Ball to score what proved to be the game-winning run.
Sophomore Chris Rouleau, pitching just his second playoff inning of the tournament, started for Monadnock and delivered a complete-game performance. He threw 121 pitches, struck out four, allowed five walks and six hits, and stranded the bases loaded in the sixth before finishing the seventh with a called third strike.
Bishop Brady, seeking its first title since 1989, struck first in the opening inning. Winn Thomas singled and later scored on an infield hit by Luke Bedard. The Huskies tied it in the fourth when Wesley McWhirk singled and scored on a wild pitch.
Monadnock finishes its season 18-3, while Brady ends at 17-3. The Giants stranded runners in five innings and couldn’t capitalize on multiple scoring chances.
The Huskies’ win marks their second straight championship, capping a playoff run defined by timely plays and depth on the mound. Despite relying on their No. 2 starter and facing a determined Brady team, Monadnock once again proved championship-ready.
