KEENE, N.H. (MyKeeneNow) Monadnock Peer Support (MPS), a Keene-based nonprofit dedicated to mental health advocacy and peer support, has appointed Stephen Tavella as its new executive director. This leadership transition comes during a challenging chapter for the organization, which aims to rebuild trust and reinforce its mission of fostering a stigma-free community for individuals navigating mental health challenges.

Stephen Tavella brings a wealth of experience in nonprofit leadership, with a background spanning program development, strategic planning, and trauma-informed management. His career includes roles at organizations such as Peer Teaching & Learning in Brattleboro and West River Valley Thrives in Townshend.

“I am thrilled and honored to have the opportunity to join Monadnock Peer Support. For nearly 30 years, MPS has been promoting a trauma-informed way of relating and inspiring all parties to learn and grow on a path to wellness,” said Tavella in the release. The warmth and sincerity I have experienced from staff and members alike have given me every indication that this community cares, empathizes, and brings joy and healing where it is most needed.”

Founded in 1995, MPS offers a wide range of free services, including weekly support groups, respite programs, and community events. The organization’s mission centers on fostering acceptance and collaboration to reduce stigma around mental health, ensuring no one feels isolated or judged.

The announcement of Tavella’s hiring comes in the shadow of legal issues involving former Executive Director Christine Allen. Allen, who led MPS from 2021 to 2023, faces federal charges of embezzling nearly $200,000 from the nonprofit. She has pleaded not guilty, with her trial set for March 2025.
