KEENE, N.H. (MyKeeneNow) Drivers and pedestrians can expect traffic disruptions in several parts of the city this week as construction crews continue work on a variety of road, sidewalk, bridge, and trail improvement projects.
The City of Keene announced that numerous infrastructure projects are either beginning or continuing during the week of June 8 through June 12, resulting in temporary lane shifts, road closures, detours, and alternating traffic patterns in several locations.
One of the most visible projects remains the reconstruction of Marlboro Street, where contractor Bazin Brothers is continuing granite curb removal and replacement between Main Street and Eastern Avenue. Temporary traffic configurations will remain in place while crews work, and city officials are asking motorists to pay close attention to posted signs and pavement markings.
The same contractor, along with Pelow & Sons, is also advancing construction of new sidewalks on Bartholomew Court and along the Cheshire Rail Trail connector leading to Marlboro Street. The sidewalk work is expected to wrap up by the end of the week, with traffic restrictions limited to daytime construction hours.
Elsewhere, work continues on the Transportation Heritage Trail near the Eastern Avenue trailhead parking area. Gordon’s Property Services and Maintenance is expected to remain on-site for the next several weeks completing improvements in the area. Drivers may encounter alternating one-way traffic near the trail crossing and parking lot while work is underway.
The city is also moving forward with preparations for the George Street Bridge replacement. New England Infrastructure, Inc. is installing a stormwater diversion system ahead of the bridge project, requiring the closure and detour of George Street near the construction zone throughout the week.
On Willow Street, BC Construction is continuing excavation work and installation of new sidewalks. Portions of the roadway may be closed during concrete pours, while alternating one-way traffic will be used during other phases of construction.
Several shorter-duration projects are also scheduled this week.
On Monday, SUR West plans to complete pavement repairs and cleanup work associated with a recent sewer main repair near the intersection of Pearl and Crescent streets. The work will require a temporary closure of Pearl Street at West Street and traffic restrictions near the construction area.
Later in the week, weather permitting, crews will return to Island Street to install pavement markings. Alternating one-way traffic is expected while that work is completed Thursday.
Drivers traveling throughout the city may also notice overnight striping operations beginning Monday. Contractor Pro-Finish Lines will be applying centerline and fog-line pavement markings on city-maintained roads, while city highway crews install turning-lane and traffic-signal markings on roadways and municipal parking lots. The work will take place overnight, with traffic expected to return to normal each morning.
Meanwhile, repairs continue at the City Hall Parking Garage, where Structural Preservation Systems is conducting selective demolition and concrete restoration work. The project is expected to continue through early July.
City officials are encouraging residents to allow extra travel time, follow all posted detours and traffic controls, and use caution when passing through active construction zones.
