KEENE, N.H. (MyKeeneNow) Governor Chris Sununu and Republican gubernatorial candidate and former U.S. Senator Kelly Ayotte made a stop on the campaign trail to visit the WKBK studios this morning and chat with host Dan Mitchell on his Open Mic program, offering insights into their political philosophies, personal experiences, and visions for the state’s future.
Sununu commended Ayotte’s positive campaign, contrasting it with typical attack ads. “I’ve been so happy with Kelly’s ads—they are real, they are genuine, and they are all positive,” Sununu said. He emphasized how this approach resonates with voters who are tired of divisiveness and looking for constructive leadership.
Both Sununu and Ayotte, despite previous criticisms of former President Trump, now support his policies, framing their backing as part of a broader Republican agenda that includes principles like local control, limited government, and individual responsibility.
When questioned on how they reconcile their past criticism of Trump, Ayotte admitted there’s dishonesty on both sides, but she remains focused on what she said matters for New Hampshire—balanced budgets, lower taxes, and investing in communities.
The conversation shifted to New Hampshire’s fiscal health, with Ayotte advocating for balanced budgets and fiscal responsibility, particularly in light of potential economic downturns. She stressed the importance of living within our means, making tough choices but ensuring we always support those who need it most, without raising taxes. Sununu highlighted the need for education reform, calling for better allocation of resources to property-poor towns and a reduction in administrative waste. Both emphasized improving core subjects like math, reading, and science.
Tourism, which has surged by 50 percent since the pandemic, was another focus of discussion. While the economic benefits are undeniable, Sununu cautioned that this growth must be managed carefully to avoid negatively impacting local communities.
Ayotte supported continued promotion of New Hampshire’s attractions, but agreed that a balance is needed between tourism growth and residents’ quality of life.
Looking ahead to the gubernatorial race, Ayotte is positioning herself as a leader who can maintain the state’s economic health while fostering a strong sense of community. Though not seeking reelection, Sununu expressed strong support for Ayotte, highlighting their shared vision for New Hampshire.
