CONCORD, N.H. (MyKeeneNow) — With winter around the corner, state officials are warning New Hampshire residents about the deadly but invisible threat of carbon monoxide poisoning.
The State Fire Marshal’s Office has rolled out a new public awareness campaign featuring Gov. Kelly Ayotte and State Fire Marshal Sean Toomey, urging families to check their carbon monoxide (CO) alarms and take steps to protect vulnerable neighbors.
“Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless, silent danger, but CO poisoning is preventable,” State Fire Marshal Sean Toomey said. “A working alarm can make all the difference.”
The campaign — funded by a U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission grant — includes radio, and social media ads that will run statewide. The funding also supported the installation of CO detectors in schools and homes.
Officials stressed that while summer may not seem like the time to worry about carbon monoxide, now is the time to act. “We want residents to use this reminder to schedule their annual maintenance for all fuel-burning heating equipment,” Toomey said.
How to Protect Your Home and Family
- Install CO alarms outside every sleeping area and on each level of your home.
- Have furnaces, boilers, and other fuel-burning systems inspected every year.
- Never run generators indoors or in enclosed spaces.
- If an alarm goes off, evacuate immediately and call 911.
Officials say the message is simple: Check your alarms, protect your family, and look out for your neighbors — especially older adults who may be at higher risk.
