CONCORD, N.H. (MyKeeneNow)– N.H. Attorney General John M. Formella announces that a coalition of 30 states has reached a settlement with Baron App, Inc., operating as Cameo. This settlement resolves an investigation into Cameo’s practices and policies surrounding videos created through its app. Cameo is a digital platform that enables consumers to purchase personalized videos from celebrities. It also allows businesses to book celebrities for promotional video endorsements.
The investigation revealed potential violations of state consumer protection laws and the Federal Trade Commission’s (FTC) guidelines on paid endorsements, according to a news release. The states claim that Cameo did not adequately inform consumers about disclosures for personalized business endorsements and failed to issue refunds to users who mistakenly purchased personal Cameos instead of the more expensive business Cameos.
“Today’s agreement with Cameo is a major victory for consumer rights and transparency in online endorsements,” said Attorney General Formella. “Cameo has agreed to implement strict disclosure protocols and enhanced monitoring systems, which are essential for protecting consumers from deceptive practices and maintaining the integrity of online commerce. Our office remains committed to enforcing consumer protection laws to ensure a fair marketplace for everyone.”
Under the terms of the settlement, Cameo will develop and enforce new programs and policies to ensure compliance with all relevant state and federal regulations, including the FTC’s Endorsement Guides.
The company will introduce a watermark system for paid advertisements; implement a system for legal disclosures and obtain acknowledgments from all participating celebrities and consumers; monitor paid advertisements for compliance and establish reporting mechanisms for non-compliant videos.
These measures aim to enhance transparency and protect consumers from misleading endorsements in the digital marketplace.
