CONCORD, N.H. (MyKeeneNow) Scammers are posing as the New Hampshire Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) in a new text message scheme designed to steal personal information, state officials warn.

Multiple residents have reported receiving fraudulent texts claiming to be from the DMV, urging them to update their “profile information” by clicking on a link, according to a press release. The link leads to a fake website that closely resembles the official DMV site, complete with the agency’s logo. Once there, victims are asked to provide sensitive details, including their driver’s license or state ID number.

State officials stress that the DMV does not request personal information via text message, the release said.

Authorities advise anyone who receives such a message to avoid clicking links and not to share any personal information. Suspected scams should be reported to the state’s Consumer Protection Hotline at (603) 271-3641 or via email at DOJ-CPB@doj.nh.gov.

Individuals who believe they have been victims of identity theft are encouraged to contact their local police department, review their credit reports, and consider setting up fraud alerts or a credit freeze. Reports can also be filed with the Federal Trade Commission at IdentityTheft.gov or by calling 877-438-4338.

State officials continue to monitor the situation and urge the public to stay cautious when receiving unsolicited messages requesting personal information.
