KEENE, N.H. (MyKeeneNow)— Keene State College is taking a significant step toward making higher education more accessible by introducing a program tailored for first-generation and low-income students.

The initiative ensures that eligible students who meet the required GPA will be automatically admitted to the college, according to a news release.

Students who qualify can apply through Common App, which is free and open to all applicants. Common App is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting access, equity, and integrity in the college admissions process. Over 1 million students apply to more than 1,000 member colleges worldwide each year through the platform.

The 2024-2025 application cycle began Aug. 1. While the Direct Admissions program simplifies the acceptance process, students are still required to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to be considered for financial aid.

“This is an exciting development for Keene State, but even more so for students who might have faced barriers to higher education,” said Peg Richmond, Keene State’s admissions director. “With just one step, students can instantly know if they are eligible for admission.”

Richmond clarified that although students will be automatically admitted if they qualify, they must still complete the Common Application for official notification. Keene State plans to provide targeted information to eligible students, encouraging them to finalize their applications.

“We want to build an uncomplicated bridge,” Richmond added.
