HINSDALE, N.H. (MyKeeneNow) Brattleboro officials are addressing a shift in traffic flow following the opening of the General John Stark Memorial Bridge, which connects Hinsdale to downtown Brattleboro via Route 142.
The bridge, which replaced two aging truss bridges over the Connecticut River, has brought new challenges to managing vehicle movement on Vernon Street and lower Main Street. Adjustments to traffic light timing were made when the bridge opened on Dec. 4, and further changes are expected as the town works with the Vermont State Agency of Transportation (VTrans), according to a news release from the town of Brattleboro.
Efforts to improve traffic efficiency in the area will involve engineers making real-time adjustments to signal timing, the release said. Officials are asking for public patience during this period as tweaks are implemented to ease congestion at the busy entry point to Brattleboro.
While the new bridge is fully operational for vehicles, it remains closed to pedestrians due to ongoing construction activities within the work zone. Pedestrian access is still available on the older truss bridges, with the new structure expected to open for foot traffic in spring 2025.
