NEWPORT, N.H. (MyKeeneNow) – A Durham, New Hampshire man is facing charges after police say he sexually assaulted a child in Newport.
Last week the Newport Police Department began investigating the reported sexual assault of a child by an adult male, according to a news release. The report alleged that the man had traveled to Newport after communicating with the child over social media, and forcibly assaulted the child while parked at a trail head.
Following an extensive investigation, police obtained an arrest warrant for Evan Pitt, 19, of Durham. He was arrested on Tuesday by Durham Police Department and transferred to the custody of Newport Police.
Pitt is charged with Aggravated Felonious Sexual Assault; Superior Physical Strength, Aggravated Felonious Sexual Assault; Coerce/Threat, Felonious Sexual Assault; Kidnapping, Felonious sexual Assault; Age Difference 4 years or more, and Certain Computer Uses prohibited.
Pitt was not eligible to have bail set by a bail commissioner, so he was detained without bail at the Sullivan County House of Corrections pending his arraignment on Wednesday.
Newport Police were assisted in the investigation by the Durham Police Department, the Child Advocacy Center of Grafton and Sullivan Counties, Dartmouth Health, the Massachusetts State Police Fusion Center, and the Lincoln Police Department’s Internet Crimes Against Children Cyber Forensics Laboratory.
