JAFFREY, N.H. (MyKeeneNow) A scenic hike on Mount Monadnock took a turn for the worse Wednesday afternoon when a 75-year-old woman from North Carolina became ill and had to be carried off the mountain.

Abby Shapiro of Asheville was hiking with her husband when she began experiencing health issues partway up the trail. Staff from Monadnock State Park were the first to reach the couple after the distress call came in around 2:20 p.m. They were soon joined by additional park personnel, Fish and Game conservation officers, and a trail crew from the New Hampshire Conservation Corps.

Rescuers stabilized Shapiro, who was suffering from a non-life-threatening medical issue, and carried her down the mountain in a litter. She reached the trailhead by 4:20 p.m. and was evaluated by Jaffrey-Rindge Ambulance staff before being released.

Officials say the incident is a reminder of how quickly conditions can shift, even on popular trails like those on Monadnock. Hikers are urged to prepare carefully, stay aware of their physical limits, and check out hikesafe.com for essential safety information before heading out.
