DUMMERSTON, VT (MyKeeneNow) A single-vehicle crash on U.S. Route 5 in Dummerston, Vermont, on Sunday afternoon resulted in the arrest of a Putney resident on multiple charges, including driving under the influence and drug possession.

The incident occurred around 2 p.m. when Vermont State Police responded to reports of a 2016 Volkswagen Jetta that had veered off the road near Canoe Brook Road. Upon arriving at the scene, troopers found the vehicle in a crash position and identified the driver as Derek R. Johnson, 44, of Putney.

Emergency responders transported Johnson to Brattleboro Memorial Hospital for treatment. During the investigation, authorities observed signs of impairment. Subsequent searches revealed Johnson was in possession of cocaine and fentanyl.

Johnson has been charged with driving under the influence, possession of fentanyl, and possession of cocaine. He has been issued a court citation to appear before the Vermont Superior Court, Windham Criminal Division, on Feb. 4, 2025.

After being cited, Johnson remained in the hospital for further treatment. No additional details about the crash or injuries were immediately available.
