KEENE, N.H. (MyKeeneNow) Drivers should expect delays and changing traffic patterns throughout Keene this week as the city’s Public Works Department moves forward with a wide range of road, bridge, utility and sidewalk improvement projects.
One of the largest projects remains the reconstruction of Marlboro Street, where contractor Bazin Brothers is continuing curb installation and drainage work between Main Street and Eastern Avenue. Alternating one-way traffic and lane shifts will remain in place in the construction zone. Beginning Thursday, crews are also scheduled to install a stormwater treatment system near Bartholomew Court, requiring the closure of Bartholomew Court at Marlboro Street. Public Works traffic will be rerouted through the Keene Ice parking lot during that work.
Construction also continues on Key Road, where Park Construction is installing a new box culvert near 68 Key Road. Water service to properties between 40 and 68 Key Road will be temporarily shut off beginning at 10 p.m. Monday while crews relocate a water main crossing beneath the new culvert. Service is expected to be restored by about 8 a.m. Tuesday. The project will then shift into the Staples parking lot, where culvert installation within the city’s drainage easement is expected to continue through the remainder of the week.
The George Street Bridge replacement project is also advancing, with utility installation beginning on the west side of the bridge. George Street will remain closed to through traffic, with detours in place during the approximately four-month construction project.
Sidewalk improvements are continuing in several neighborhoods. BC Construction is wrapping up loaming, seeding and cleanup work on Gardner Street through Tuesday while beginning a new sidewalk installation project on Jennison Street that is expected to last about two weeks. Alternating one-way traffic will be used during active work hours, with normal traffic restored each evening.
Elsewhere, crews will continue grading and placing gravel and loam along the Transportation Heritage Trail near Eastern Avenue, a project that is not expected to affect traffic.
At the City Hall parking garage, repairs to handrails, stairs and snow gates will continue throughout the week. City officials also announced the garage deck will close nightly beginning July 20 for about one week so crews can install a protective traffic membrane.
Additional maintenance work is planned near Central Square, where Vortex Industries will clean and inspect the storm drain beneath City Hall beginning Monday. Some parking spaces and sidewalks may be temporarily closed while the work is underway.
City highway crews are also scheduled to pave the Elliot Street sidewalk along Main Street on Wednesday, weather permitting, requiring temporary sidewalk closures and possible traffic shifts. On Thursday, paving is planned on Silent Way, where alternating one-way traffic may be needed during construction.
Water and Sewer Division crews are expected to close Ralston Street at Winchester Street for one day while installing protective bollards around a fire hydrant at the intersection.
Throughout the week, Public Works employees will also conduct roadside mowing, brush cutting and tree trimming on city-maintained roads in Ward 1 as part of the city’s Ward Operations Week program.
Meanwhile, reconstruction of the parking lot at the Public Works facility on Marlboro Street continues, with visitor parking temporarily relocated to the lot adjacent to Bartholomew Court. The parking lot project is expected to be completed by the end of July, weather permitting.
City officials are encouraging motorists, pedestrians and cyclists to use caution when traveling through active work zones, obey posted detours and allow extra time to reach their destinations.
