The Sanford Mainers scored three runs in the seventh and eighth innings to take down the SwampBats 7-2 on Wednesday night.
Sanford took the lead on a single in the top of the second, but Alex Alicea (Louisville) threw a runner out trying to score from second base on an infield hit to retire the side. SwampBats’ starter Freddy Beruvides (Virginia) struck out three and allowed one run over two innings. Josh Gunther (Wake Forest) came out of the bullpen with a runner on first in the third, and proceeded to strike out seven Mainers over three scoreless, hitless innings in his summer debut.
The SwampBats tied the game when Nick Romano (Florida Atlantic) scampered home on a groundout to shortstop by Joe Jaconski (Penn State). Later in the inning, Alicea scored on a wild pitch to give the home team a 2-1 lead. Dane Burns (Mississippi State) pitched a scoreless sixth but ran into trouble in the seventh. Two infield hits set the table for the Mainers’ Jack Toomey, who slugged a two-run double to the right field wall to make it 3-2 Sanford. Toomey later hustled home on a wild pitch to increase the lead to two. In the eighth inning, The Mainers tacked on a run with a double steal before a two-run homerun from Christopher Willis broke the game open at 7-2. Braxton Stewart (Louisville) pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning for Keene. The SwampBats could not manage a run in the final four innings.
Keene (4-2) visits the Bristol Blues on Thursday at 6:30.
