WALPOLE, N.H. (MyKeeneNow) Savings Bank of Walpole is warning customers about a scam in which callers and texters are impersonating bank employees and attempting to steal online banking credentials.

According to the bank, customers have reported receiving phone calls or text messages from someone claiming to be a Savings Bank of Walpole employee. The communications may even appear to originate from an SBW telephone number, making the scam more difficult to recognize.

The scammer may tell the customer that their bank account has been compromised and then provide a link purportedly intended to resolve the problem. The link instead directs victims to a fraudulent website designed to capture their online banking username, password and other account credentials.

Savings Bank of Walpole emphasized that the person making these calls or sending the messages is not a bank employee.

Customers who receive a suspicious call or text are advised not to respond, click on any provided links or disclose personal, account or online banking information. The bank said it will never call customers to request account information, passwords or online banking credentials.

Anyone who receives one of these calls or messages is encouraged to contact Savings Bank of Walpole directly, even if they did not provide any information. The bank can be reached at (603) 352-1822 or (877) 925-7653.

The bank is also asking customers to share the warning with friends and family as scammers continue using increasingly convincing methods to impersonate financial institutions.
