KEENE, N.H. (MyKeeneNow.com) The Savings Bank of Walpole recently warned its customers about a potential new scam they might encounter. In a Facebook post on Tuesday afternoon, the bank outlined the type of text that users might receive.

According to the Savings Bank of Walpole, scammers pretending to be the bank will text bank users asking if a recent charge on their card is legitimate, asking them to respond N or Y. An example that was used by the SBW showed a text where a scammer said a user’s card was recently used at Walmart, totaling to a $969 charge.

The message from the bank is simple; don’t reply, and don’t click on any links. Responding to the text with an N or Y will result in a fake follow-up call where scammers will try to steal banking information, such as credit and debit card numbers, along with account numbers.

If a user suspects fraud, they are encouraged to call the Savings Bank of Walpole at (603)-352-1822 or to check their online banking transactions to ensure no fraud has taken place. In more extreme situations where users believe fraud has already occurred, they are encouraged to freeze their bank accounts so no money can be transferred.

The SBW has some tips on how to keep personal banking information safe, including but not limited to choosing strong passwords that are unique to the user, and never sharing any personal or banking information with outside sources.

SBW reminds its users that texts from the bank will always include a five-digit code and will never ask users to click on any links. It will also never ask for bank account numbers, routing numbers, PIN numbers, security codes or passwords.
