MARLBOROUGH, N.H. (MyKeeneNow) A Swanzey man was killed Friday morning after a pickup truck collided head-on with a school bus carrying Monadnock Regional Middle High School students on Route 12 in Marlborough, according to New Hampshire State Police.
Troopers responded to the crash just after 7 a.m. near Webb Depot Road. Investigators said a school bus driven by James French, 77, of Keene, was traveling north on Route 12 when it was struck by a red 2008 Ford F-250 pickup truck driven by David Peloski, 74, of Swanzey.
Authorities said Peloski, who was the sole occupant of the pickup truck, died at the scene. His body will be taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for an autopsy.
Thirteen Monadnock Regional Middle High School students were on board the bus at the time of the crash. Officials said several students were transported to Cheshire Medical Center as a precaution, but no serious injuries were reported.
Earlier Friday morning, Southwestern Fire Mutual Aid confirmed all students on the bus had been taken to the hospital, where parents were directed to reunite with them.
SAU 93 Superintendent Jeremy Rathbun identified the vehicle involved as the district’s Fitzwilliam bus, designated M-2. Rathbun said the students were evaluated by emergency personnel at the scene before being transported for treatment of what were believed to be minor injuries.
“MRMHS administration is on-site to support our students and to facilitate reunification with their families,” Rathbun said in a statement issued Friday morning.
French, the driver of the school bus, was also taken to the hospital with injuries believed to be serious but not life-threatening, according to school officials and state police.
A mass casualty incident was declared following the crash, bringing numerous emergency crews to the scene.
Route 12 was closed for approximately four hours between Flat Roof Mill Road in Swanzey and Webb Depot Road while investigators processed the scene. The roadway has since reopened.
Troopers assigned to the New Hampshire State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Unit are leading the investigation, with assistance from the Marlborough Police and Fire departments.
