Second small earthquake detected in Chesterfield
The quake on Monday was the second felt in the same area in Chesterfield this month.

KEENE, NH – A small earthquake was detected in Chesterfield for the second time this month.
The United States Geological Survey reported the 1.4 magnitude quake at 8:25 Monday evening in west/southwest Chesterfield. It follows a 1.6 magnitude quake in nearly the same spot detected on May 18th.
In a report the New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services said many faults are mapped in New Hampshire and the rest of New England. The report goes on to say that there is at least some possibility of an earthquake anywhere on the planet, but the exact risk is difficult to assess.
According to the Mecalli Intensity scale, any earthquake measured at a 3.0 or less on the Richter scale is “Instrumental”, meaning it can only be detected by instruments, or “Feeble”, only felt by a few people at rest.
Earthquakes felt in New Hampshire don’t always relate to an epicenter in the state, as was the case in April when 4.8 magnitude quake centered in Lebanon, New Jersey was felt all across the northeast, including in the Monadnock Region. That quake fell on the Mecalli scale between “Rather Strong” and “Strong”. Characteristic effects of that include plaster and other objects falling, and windows breaking, along with the quake being felt by all, and frightening to many.
