TROY, N.H. (MyKeeneNow) — A second victim has died following an early-morning residential fire in Troy on March 31, according to the New Hampshire State Fire Marshal’s Office.
Madalyn K. Jalava, 24, succumbed to injuries after being transported to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. Authorities said she had been listed in critical condition following the fire.
The first victim, identified as 56-year-old Benjamin P. Jalava, was pronounced dead after being taken to Cheshire Medical Center in Keene. Both victims were residents of the home where the fire occurred.
Emergency crews were dispatched to 51 Morse Street at approximately 1:45 a.m. after a 911 caller reported a chimney fire spreading to the porch. A second call minutes later indicated the occupants were trapped inside as the fire intensified.
Firefighters arriving on scene encountered heavy fire conditions and rescued two individuals from the burning home before providing emergency medical care. The victims were transported to area hospitals, where both later died. Family pets also perished in the fire.
Autopsies for both victims are pending through the New Hampshire Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
Investigators with the State Fire Marshal’s Office continue to examine the origin and cause of the fire. While the investigation remains active, officials have said they do not currently believe the fire is suspicious.
Multiple mutual aid departments assisted at the scene, and no first responders were injured. Authorities are asking anyone with information to contact the Fire Marshal’s Office.
