KEENE, N.H. (MyKeeneNow) U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen is scheduled to visit Keene and Peterborough today, Wednesday, July 2, to draw attention to the potential fallout from the Senate’s passage of a sweeping Republican-backed megabill that she says would strip health care from millions and undermine New Hampshire’s clean energy economy.
Shaheen joined WKBK’s “Morning Show” with Dan Mitchell earlier today warning listeners that the bill includes deep cuts to Medicaid that could result in more than 46,000 Granite Staters losing coverage.
Shaheen has called the legislation “dangerous” in that it would devastate New Hampshire families, health care providers, and rural communities, she said.
At 11:30 a.m., Shaheen is scheduled to hold a roundtable discussion at Monadnock Family Services in Keene as part of what her office is calling a “Medicaid Impact Tour.” She’ll be joined by Keene Mayor Jay Kahn, local caregivers, and mental health advocates, including MFS Chief Medical Officer and interim CEO Mindy Asbury, to discuss how the proposed Medicaid cuts would affect patients and service providers in the region.
Later in the afternoon, at 3 p.m., Shaheen plans to travel to the Peterborough Town Library for a second roundtable with town officials, energy advocates and local business leaders. The conversation is expected to focus on provisions in the megabill that would eliminate tax credits for energy efficiency and renewable energy projects—programs that Shaheen argues are essential to keeping energy costs low and supporting clean energy jobs in the state.
During the Senate’s “Vote-a-Rama” amendment process, Shaheen introduced an amendment to preserve four longstanding energy tax credits. All but two Republican senators—Susan Collins of Maine and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska—voted against it.
“Families, small businesses, and local governments are all depending on these incentives,” Shaheen said on WKBK. “Stripping them away not only raises costs—it pulls the rug out from under job creators in communities like Peterborough.”
Peterborough Town Administrator Nicole MacStay is expected to speak at the roundtable about the town’s clean energy initiatives and the challenges it could face if the bill becomes law.
The legislation, championed by former President Donald Trump and Senate GOP leaders, passed Tuesday night in a party-line vote and now heads to the House for consideration. It combines major tax breaks with sharp reductions to Medicaid, housing assistance, and renewable energy investments.
Shaheen has vowed to continue fighting the bill and said today’s events are part of her effort to raise awareness of its real-world consequences.
