CONCORD, N.H. (MyKeeneNow) Law enforcement agencies across New Hampshire are stepping up patrols this Labor Day weekend in a push to prevent impaired driving incidents. The effort runs from Friday, August 29, through Monday, September 1, and involves state, county, and local officers working together to remove dangerous drivers from the roads.
The initiative is part of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s ongoing Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign, which began August 13 and continues through the holiday weekend, according to a news release. Labor Day is traditionally one of the state’s busiest travel periods, and officials say alcohol-related crashes remain a serious concern.
From 2020 through 2023, nine people died in crashes over the holiday weekend in New Hampshire. In 2022 alone, five lives were lost and many more were affected by alcohol-related accidents. During last year’s Labor Day enforcement campaign, officers made 40 arrests for offenses ranging from DUI to speeding, reckless driving, drug violations, and outstanding warrants.
“We urge anyone planning to drink or use drugs this weekend to stay off the roads,” said Lt. Chris Storm of the New Hampshire State Police, who oversees the Office of Highway Safety, the release said. “Using a rideshare, taxi, or having a designated driver can prevent tragedies. The risks to yourself and others simply aren’t worth it.”
In New Hampshire, driving while impaired carries heavy penalties, including potential fines of $10,000 or more, license suspension, and possible jail time.
Authorities encourage residents and visitors to report any suspected impaired drivers by noting the vehicle’s details and calling 911 immediately.
The Office of Highway Safety thanked all participating agencies for their role in protecting the public and keeping New Hampshire roads safe over the holiday weekend.
