BRATTLEBORO, Vt. (MyKeeneNow) — A 19-year-old man was ordered held without bail Friday after being charged with second-degree murder following a stabbing death Thursday night.

Lavadus J. Williams, of Saxtons River, was apprehended about 14 hours after the incident.

According to an affidavit filed in court by Detective Sgt. Joshua Lynde, Brattleboro police responded to the scene just after 10:45 p.m. by two anonymous calls reporting a stabbing. Emergency responders from the Brattleboro Fire Department arrived quickly, but despite their life-saving efforts, the victim, Aaron Colburn, 25, was pronounced dead at Brattleboro Memorial Hospital shortly after 11 p.m.

Surveillance footage from the transportation center shows Williams and Colburn speaking on the sidewalk before Williams pulls out a knife and stabs Colburn in the torso, the affidavit states. Colburn, realizing the severity of his injury, walked to a nearby bench and then ran toward the crosswalk where police found him lying in a pool of blood.

Williams was identified as the suspect through witness statements and video evidence. He was processed at the Brattleboro Police Department and pleaded not guilty during his arraignment Friday at Windham Superior Court.

A court hearing is scheduled for July 5 at 2 p.m. If convicted, Williams faces a sentence of 20 years to life in prison.

The investigation is ongoing, and authorities have urged anyone with information to contact the Brattleboro Police Department at 802-257-7946 or use the anonymous tip line at 802-251-8188.
