SWANZEY, N.H. (MyKeeneNow) – A Swanzey man was taken into custody Thursday afternoon after a nearly 15-hour standoff with police at a multi-family home on South Road.
The situation began around 10 p.m. Wednesday when officers responded to a noise complaint at 231 South Road, according to Town Administrator Michael Branley.
When officers arrived at the scene, they encountered Ian MacNeil, 36, who allegedly pointed a firearm at them. Police immediately retreated and tried to deescalate the situation, but MacNeil barricaded himself inside his residence, refusing to come out despite repeated efforts by law enforcement to persuade him throughout the night.
The standoff stretched into the following day, with police closing part of South Road and evacuating nearby residents as a precaution. While there was no immediate danger to the public, residents were temporarily sheltered at Whitcomb Hall on Main Street.
Authorities used a bullhorn to encourage MacNeil to surrender peacefully, and a series of loud pops, possibly tear gas, were heard before dawn. Officers reassured MacNeil that they were not firing at him in an effort to keep the situation calm.
By 1 p.m. on Thursday, law enforcement deployed a New Hampshire State Police K9 unit, which successfully apprehended MacNeil, according to a news release. He sustained minor injuries during the arrest and was transported to Cheshire Medical Center for treatment.
MacNeil now faces charges of criminal threatening with a deadly weapon, a felony, and resisting arrest, a misdemeanor, the release said.
Multiple agencies were involved in the incident, including the Swanzey Police Department, New Hampshire State Police, Cheshire County Sheriff’s Office, Cheshire County EMS, and the Swanzey Fire Department. A state police armored vehicle was also deployed at the scene to support the response.
Despite the tense standoff, no serious injuries were reported. South Road was reopened after MacNeil’s arrest, and the Swanzey Police Department will provide further updates as necessary.
