WILTON, N.H. (MyKeeneNow) A 75-year-old Swanzey man was injured while helping his son haul a deer out of the woods during a hunt on Fisk Hill Saturday evening, New Hampshire Fish and Game officials reported. The man, identified as Vaughn Stewart, slipped on leaves while descending a steep hillside around 6:30 p.m., sustaining a head injury that left him unable to walk.

Stewart’s son called 911 from the scene, prompting a response from New Hampshire Fish and Game Conservation Officers, the Wilton Fire Department, and Wilton Ambulance Service, according to a news release from Fish and Game. Rescuers found Stewart about three-quarters of a mile from the nearest parking area in difficult terrain.

A paramedic treated Stewart on-site before he was assisted down the hill and transported the rest of the way to the parking area by utility terrain vehicle (UTV), the release said. Stewart was then taken by Wilton Ambulance to Southern New Hampshire Medical Center for further evaluation.

Officials reported that conservation officers and firefighters also retrieved the deer from the woods, completing the recovery just after 9:45 p.m.
