KEENE, N.H. – (MyKeeneNow) An 18-year-old male mountain biker was rescued following a crash on the Sunset Trail at Granite Gorge Sunday.
The Keene Fire Department responded to the emergency just before 4 p.m., according to a news release.
The young cyclist suffered significant injuries in the crash, prompting immediate first aid. Despite the severity of his injuries, medical helicopters were grounded due to adverse weather conditions. Firefighters and paramedics made contact with the injured biker approximately 15 minutes after being dispatched, finding him about a quarter-mile from the base lodge.
Keene Fire Department personnel, equipped with technical rescue gear and off-road vehicles, navigated the challenging terrain to reach the patient. After providing initial treatment, the team carried him through the woods to their all-terrain vehicle, which transported him to an ambulance waiting at the base of the mountain. The teen was then taken to Cheshire Medical Center with injuries believed to be non-life-threatening.
The fire department highlighted the importance of wearing proper safety gear, such as helmets and chest protectors, and emphasized the benefits of riding in groups for safety. They credited the biker’s protective equipment and the quick assistance from nearby individuals for the positive outcome.
This incident underscores the importance of preparedness and safety in outdoor recreational activities, particularly in remote and mountainous areas.
