KEENE, N.H. (MyKeeneNow) After a nationwide search, The Colonial Performing Arts Center names Keith Marks its new executive director, marking a turning point for the iconic venue.

Marks steps into this new role (effective Jan. 6, 2025) following five years as director of Next Stage Arts in Putney. There, he redefined the nonprofit as a regional cultural center, introducing innovative programming and strengthening its marketing and donor reach.

“I’m excited to join The Colonial at such a pivotal moment,” Marks shared. “This is a chance to listen, learn, and collaborate with the community here to chart a path forward that celebrates the arts while embracing Keene’s growing momentum.”

To find the next executive director, the theater partnered with The Arts Consulting Group, an executive research firm specializing in the performing arts, according to a news release. A nationwide search with more than 50 applicants from around the country was conducted, and after several rounds of interviews, staff and search committee members unanimously decided Marks was the choice, the release said.

Originally from Florida, Marks’ entrepreneurial spirit first emerged in the arts scene, where he launched pop-up cultural spaces and curated unique arts experiences. His path has been anything but linear: he has been a nonprofit founder, a journalist for NPR affiliates, a musician, and even a massage therapist.

His time at Next Stage Arts was marked by resilience and innovation, particularly during the pandemic, when he introduced the popular Bandwagon Summer Series and embraced live-streaming technology to broaden the organization’s reach.

For Marks, stepping into The Colonial is both a professional milestone and a personal challenge. “It’s about growth – not just for me, but for the organization and the community it serves,” he said.

Marks plans to focus first on listening: understanding the needs and aspirations of staff, audiences, and Keene’s broader community. This foundation will guide his vision for the Colonial’s next chapter, which he envisions as a cornerstone for regional cultural and economic development.

The Colonial Performing Arts Center, which boasts two venues, has long been a beacon for the arts in New England. Its flagship Colonial Theatre, a historic theater dating back to 1924, and the more intimate SHOWROOM space offer a wide range of performances and programs. Marks sees opportunities to amplify the Colonial’s influence as Keene experiences a cultural and economic resurgence.

Marks also recognizes Keene’s potential as a hub for creative growth. “Keene is on the rise, and The Colonial has a strong opportunity to be at the heart of that transformation,” he said.
