KEENE, N.H. (MyKeeneNow) A Massachusetts man suffered a serious but non-life-threatening leg injury Saturday after crashing while riding a trail bike on the Cobb Hill Trail in Harrisville.

Mark Tavano, 63, of North Andover, Massachusetts, was riding with a large group shortly before 4 p.m. Oct. 3 when he encountered a small tree that had fallen across the trail, according to New Hampshire Fish and Game.

Tavano attempted to maneuver around the obstacle but struck a rock on the opposite side of the tree. He lost his balance and injured his left leg, then called for assistance.

Members of Tavano’s riding group helped get his bike back to the trailhead while he remained on the trail awaiting emergency responders.

Harrisville Fire, Cheshire EMS and New Hampshire Fish and Game conservation officers responded. Firefighters used a four-wheeler to remove Tavano from the trail, and Cheshire EMS transported him to Cheshire Medical Center in Keene for additional medical evaluation.

Fish and Game officials noted that Tavano was wearing a helmet, protective pads, appropriate footwear and other safety equipment at the time of the crash. The agency is reminding trail riders to use extra caution when navigating technical terrain and unexpected obstacles.
