JAFFREY, N.H. (MyKeeneNow) – Two teenage hikers were rescued on Gap Mountain in Jaffrey in the high heat and humidity Monday.
New Hampshire Fish and Game Conservation Officers received a report around 5:00 Monday evening about two 16-year-old hikers with the YMCA Camp Takota who were in and out of consciousness on Gap Mountain.
Fish and Game said that the altered state was presumed to be a result of intense heat and humidity as the region is under an Extreme Heat Watch until 8:00 Tuesday evening. Heat index values were expected to reach 107 degrees as temperatures climbed into the upper 90’s.
Fish and Game Conservation Officers responded to help the hikers off the mountain along with members of the Jaffrey, Fitzwilliam, Dublin, Rindge, Keene, Marlborough, and Troy Fire Departments, Troy and Jaffrey Police, and the Southwest NH Fire Mutual Aid.
A landowner in the area offered their driveway as a staging area, taking about half a mile off the distance for crews to reach the patients. One of the juvenile hikers was able to hike down under her own power after being aided by first responders, while the other require more assistance and was carried back to the awaiting ambulance.
Both hikers were treated at the scene and transported to Cheshire Medical Center for further treatment.
As summer recreation ramps up Fish and Game is reminding hikers to be prepared for the hotter conditions in the forecast.
