MONADNOCK REGION, N.H. (MyKeeneNow) This Veterans Day, communities across the Monadnock Region are coming together to honor those who have served. The events, hosted by local organizations and supported by veterans’ groups, will offer tributes, parades, and moments of remembrance on Monday, November 11.
Keene
Ruck-Up Veterans Outpost, in partnership with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, will hold its annual Veterans Day Community Suicide Prevention Walk in Keene’s Central Square. Registration begins at 1:30 p.m., with an opening ceremony at 1:45 p.m. The 3.3-mile walk, which aims to raise awareness and support for suicide prevention, steps off at 2 p.m. Those interested can sign up at afsp.org as individuals or teams, with opportunities to gather donations. Walk-up registration and donations will also be accepted on the day.
The Knights of Columbus will be offering free coffee and donuts at St. Bernard’s Church on Main Street through 10:30 a.m.
Jaffrey
In Jaffrey, the day’s events begin with a parade that assembles at the Blake Street parking lot at 10:15 a.m. and steps off at 10:40 a.m. All veterans and active military members are invited to join. The parade will proceed to the town common, where a prayer and wreath-laying will take place, along with an address by retired U.S. Navy officer William “Bud” Taylor. Refreshments will follow at the John Humiston American Legion Post 11 on Webster Street. This event is hosted by American Legion Post 11, VFW Post 5613, and the town of Jaffrey.
Rindge
In Rindge, a Veterans Day service will be held at Cathedral of the Pines starting at 10:45 a.m. The ceremony will honor World War II veteran Leslie Tallarico, featuring a color guard, a firing squad, and guest speaker veteran Scott Fifield. Attendees can register at cathedralofthepines.org/register.
Swanzey
Swanzey will hold a ceremony at the veterans monument in West Swanzey at 11 a.m. Boy and Girl Scouts will participate in the honors, with Civil Air Patrol cadets presenting the colors. Rev. Dr. David Stinson, a former U.S. Navy rear admiral, will deliver the address. A lunch reception will follow at the West Swanzey Community Church. In the event of inclement weather, the ceremony will move indoors. American Legion Post 84 is hosting.
Each of these events provides an opportunity for the Monadnock Region to pay tribute to veterans and reflect on their sacrifices.
