KEENE, N.H. (MyKeeneNow) A daily effort to support homebound residents in the Monadnock Region is looking for more helping hands.
Home Healthcare, Hospice & Community Services (HCS), the Meals on Wheels provider for Cheshire County, is seeking volunteers to assist with weekday meal deliveries in Keene. The program serves hundreds of older adults and individuals with disabilities who are unable to prepare food on their own, providing not only nutrition but also regular social contact.
Each morning, volunteers pick up meals from HCS and follow assigned routes, delivering food directly to recipients’ homes. The time commitment is typically one to two hours, and participants use their own vehicles. Organizers say the role is designed to be flexible, allowing people to volunteer on a regular schedule or step in as needed.
Beyond delivering meals, volunteers often provide a brief but meaningful interaction. For some recipients, that visit may be their only face-to-face contact of the day, offering reassurance and a sense of connection.
HCS officials say the program plays a key role in helping residents remain independent while continuing to live safely at home. Volunteers are provided with training and support before beginning their routes.
The nonprofit organization serves more than 2,000 individuals daily across 52 communities in southwestern New Hampshire through a range of home health, hospice, and community-based services.
