KEENE, N.H. – (MyKeeneNow) Firefighters extinguished a second-alarm fire late Wednesday night at the city’s recycling center and transfer station.
The Keene Fire Department received a call reporting a fire at the center at 55 Old Summit Road.
It resulted in no injuries and no damage to equipment.
Services at the transfer station resumed as usual this morning following a prompt evaluation of the building.
Preliminary assessments suggest no significant structural damage has occurred, though extensive repairs will be necessary..H. Department of Environmental Services of the incident, according to a news release from Deputy City Manager Rebecca Landry Thursday afternoon.
While the exact cause of the fire is not known, Landry noted, it may have originated from incompatible materials disposed of, leading to spontaneous combustion.
She also mentioned this was the second fire at the facility in seven years and that the city is exploring preventative measures to avoid future incidents.
Upon the insurance company’s completion of their investigation, the necessary repairs will be scheduled.
