KEENE, N.H. (MyKeeneNow) Local news radio station WKBK brought together community leaders and educators this past weekend to discuss everything from summer recreation opportunities to the future of Keene State College.
On the morning show “What’s Happening,” host Mike Hoefer focused the first hour on upcoming seasonal programming from Keene Parks and Recreation and academic initiatives at Keene State College.
Carrah Fiske Hennessey, director of Parks and Recreation, outlined a full slate of summer activities, including outdoor concerts, movies under the stars, and weekly “park pop-ups” designed to bring families into neighborhood green spaces. This year’s concert series will take place at Fuller Park due to downtown construction, featuring a range of musical styles from blues to big band and classic hits.
The department is also expanding its offerings with adaptive swim lessons, water fitness programs, and toddler splash sessions. Fiske Hennessey emphasized the importance of accessible and affordable swim instruction, noting it plays a critical role in child safety. She added that staffing remains a priority, with ongoing hiring for lifeguards, instructors, and seasonal recreation workers.
Meanwhile, Keene State College Provost Kirsti Sandy discussed the institution’s academic direction and its emphasis on blending liberal arts education with career readiness. She highlighted more than 1,000 internships completed by students in the past year, calling hands-on experience essential for career development.
Sandy said the college continues to strengthen partnerships with local businesses and organizations to expand internship pipelines, while also growing programs tailored to adult learners and those seeking career changes. She pointed to emerging fields like sustainable product design and precision manufacturing as areas aligned with regional workforce needs.
The conversation also touched on broader challenges in higher education, including funding and public perception, with Sandy emphasizing the importance of community collaboration in shaping future programs.
