KEENE, N.H. (MyKeeneNow) Certified wildlife biologist Eric Orff appeared on Good Morning with Dan Mitchell today to discuss a range of wildlife topics specific to New Hampshire, focusing on bats, mountain lions and other species in the region.

Orff, who served more than 31 years with the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department and wrote”What’s Wild: A Half Century of Wisdom from the Woods and Rivers of New England,” addressed key wildlife issues during the hour-long interview.

A significant portion of the conversation centered on bats, including a recent bat infestation at a New Hampshire school. Orff explained bat behavior, proper removal techniques, and the ongoing decline in bat populations due to white-nose syndrome. Bats are a protected species in New Hampshire, Orff emphasized, urging humane removal methods. He also highlighted their ecological role in controlling insect populations.

Turning to mountain lions, Orff remarked on decades of reported sightings in the state, though he noted that many turn out to be other animals, such as bobcats. Despite public fascination, he said, evidence for a consistent mountain lion presence in New Hampshire remains elusive.

The discussion also touched on the challenges posed by exotic pets, such as snakes and alligators, which occasionally escape and create environmental risks. Orff praised New Hampshire’s strict policies on exotic animal ownership, saying they help prevent ecological issues.

Later, the conversation covered more familiar local species, such as flying squirrels, deer, and rabbits. Orff explained the differences between New England cottontail rabbits and snowshoe hares, noting habitat changes that threaten some populations.

Throughout the interview, Orff offered practical advice for dealing with wildlife in residential areas and urged listeners to appreciate the region’s natural world. He closed with a call to action: “Be wild. Get outside. Live life on the wild side of New Hampshire.”
