WINCHESTER, N.H. (MyKeeneNow) A man was flown to the hospital with a life-threatening arm injury Thursday afternoon after an accident involving heavy equipment at his workplace.

The incident occurred around 3 p.m., when emergency crews responded to a report of a worker whose arm had been severed after becoming caught in machinery. According to police, the injury occurred at a gravel pit on the property.

Later that day, Steven Lawrence identified himself as the victim in a Facebook post. His profile lists him as working at Leonard W. Lawrence Excavating. In his update, Lawrence said he was stable and undergoing treatment at Massachusetts General Hospital, where additional surgeries are planned. He also noted that doctors were unable to reattach his arm.

A medical helicopter was called to transport him from a landing zone at Monadnock Speedway, not far from the accident site. Lawrence was initially taken to UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester before being transferred to Boston.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has been notified and is conducting an investigation, which is routine in cases involving serious workplace injuries.

Winchester Police Chief David Rice credited the town’s volunteer fire department with a quick and effective response, which he said likely made a critical difference in the outcome.
