KEENE, N.H. (MyKeeneNow)  A powerful winter storm is sweeping across southern New Hampshire today, Monday, Feb. 23, bringing heavy snow, gusty winds and dangerous travel conditions to Cheshire County and beyond.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning in effect until 10 p.m. Monday. Forecasters say total snow accumulations will range between 6 and 12 inches, with wind gusts as high as 35 mph.

The storm moved in overnight Sunday and is expected to continue impacting roadways and visibility through the evening commute.

Periods of moderate snowfall combined with blowing and drifting snow are likely to create near-zero visibility at times, especially in open areas. While the threat of widespread power outages is considered limited, strong winds could still break tree limbs and toss unsecured objects.

State Police Urge Caution

New Hampshire State Police are urging residents to stay off the roads unless travel is absolutely necessary.

“If you don’t have to travel, stay at home,” officials said.

For those who must drive, motorists are advised to:

  • Ensure tires have adequate tread.

  • Check that all lights are working properly.

  • Keep the gas tank full.

  • Pack extra warm clothing, a flashlight, food and water in case of emergency.

  • Drive slowly and use extreme caution.
