KEENE, N.H. (MyKeeneNow) A large propane leak at the Home Depot in Keene early Tuesday morning prompted a two-alarm emergency response and the temporary evacuation of the store and surrounding businesses.

According to officials, Keene Fire Department crews responded just before 7 a.m. to 22 Ashbrook Road after receiving reports of a strong propane odor. When firefighters arrived, they discovered a significant leak from a 1,000-gallon propane tank, part of a five-tank storage area located near the building. Propane vapors were actively venting into both the structure and nearby wooded areas.

Given the risk of explosion from the accumulating gas, firefighters quickly evacuated the store and shut down electrical systems to reduce ignition risk. A heavy haze of propane vapor and high humidity conditions led commanders to escalate the response to a second alarm. Additional fire engines and ladder trucks were brought in from Swanzey, Brattleboro, Chesterfield, Marlborough, Walpole, and Spofford, with backup provided by Cheshire County Ambulance and Eversource.

Crews used water streams to disperse propane vapor away from the building while ensuring the area remained below explosive gas limits. Firefighters also performed extensive safety sweeps to verify full evacuation of the property. A Suburban Propane technician worked alongside firefighters to stop the leak by capping the faulty valve.

One person was evaluated on scene for possible exposure but did not require hospitalization. No injuries were reported among emergency personnel or store employees.

The incident was declared under control just after 7:20 a.m. and after extensive ventilation and air quality checks, the Home Depot was cleared for reentry. The wider Monadnock Marketplace plaza also resumed normal operations shortly thereafter.

The Keene Fire Department’s Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the cause of the leak. No property damage estimates have been released.
