BRATTLEBORO, VT (MyKeeneNow) A series of fires along Putney Road early Tuesday morning led to the arrest of a man previously convicted of arson, after firefighters and police responded to a string of small but suspicious blazes.

Authorities were called to the scene around 12:40 a.m. after multiple fires were reported in dumpsters and waste bins behind several businesses, including Burton Car Wash, Colonial Motel, and O’Reilly Auto Parts. Firefighters were able to quickly contain the flames, which fortunately caused no reported injuries or major property damage. The Brattleboro Police Department continues to investigate the recent incident.

Brattleboro police soon located a man sleeping under bushes near the China Buffet restaurant. He was identified as 47-year-old Darren J. Bolio, described in court documents as homeless and originally from New Hampshire. Bolio was arrested and charged with second-degree arson later that day. He is currently being held without bail while awaiting a mental health evaluation.

The car wash remains open and undamaged.

Bolio has a known history with fire-related crimes. In 2016, he pleaded guilty to arson following a 2015 break-in at a Keene, N.H. auto shop where several fires were set. He served a year in jail and received a suspended prison sentence for related charges.

Earlier this month, Bolio was arrested at the Brattleboro Transportation Center on charges of aggravated disorderly conduct and a hate-motivated crime. Those charges remain pending.
