KEENE, N.H. (MyKeeneNow) — A school bus carrying an out-of-town high school athletic team from Concord caught fire Saturday on Route 9 near Route 10 in Keene, prompting a response from local and state emergency agencies, officials said.

The Keene Police Department and Keene Fire Department were dispatched to the scene on Jan. 3 after reports of a bus fire. Police said the bus had been safely evacuated prior to the arrival of emergency responders.

Upon arrival, firefighters found the engine compartment of the bus fully engulfed in flames. The fire was brought under control, and authorities confirmed that no injuries were reported.

The students and coaches aboard the bus were returning from a sporting event in Keene. A separate bus transporting another group of Concord High School athletes from the same event was able to take the displaced team and coaches back to Concord.

Administrators from Concord High School implemented a communication plan to notify parents about the incident, police said.

The bus, owned by Concord School District Transportation, was later towed from the scene.

Keene police were assisted by the Keene Fire Department, New Hampshire State Police, and the New Hampshire Department of Transportation. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact Officer Jack Laporte of the Keene Police Department at jlaporte@keenenh.gov.
