KEENE, N.H. (MyKeeneNow) A mid-morning fire Tuesday caused significant smoke and structural damage to a three-unit home in Keene, sending one person to be evaluated for smoke inhalation.
Keene firefighters were dispatched at 10:25 a.m. to 14-16 Grove St. after a caller reported flames coming from a bathroom fan in a rear apartment. Crews arrived within a minute and reported smoke visible from the three-story, wood-frame building.
The 5,279-square-foot structure is a traditional New Englander-style multi-family residence with three occupied apartments, the City said in a news release. Fire officials say the blaze started in a first-floor bathroom in the rear apartment and quickly extended into concealed spaces between floors and up into the attic.
Firefighters conducted a search of all units to ensure no one else was inside and to check for further fire spread. While the heaviest fire and water damage was contained to the first-floor apartment where the fire began, flames spread through interior wall cavities into the second floor and attic, causing significant structural damage in those areas. The entire building sustained extensive smoke damage.
One person was checked by emergency medical personnel for possible smoke inhalation but was not transported to the hospital.
Utilities were shut off to the affected apartment but left operational in the other units to maintain heat and electricity for remaining residents.
In total, 21 Keene Fire Department personnel responded, along with 13 mutual aid responders from Swanzey, Brattleboro, Jaffrey, Surry and Cheshire County.
Damage to the building is estimated between $50,000 and $70,000. The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Keene Fire Department Fire Marshal’s Office.
