FITZWILLIAM, N.H. (MyKeeneNow) A section of Route 12 in Fitzwilliam was closed for about two hours Monday morning after part of the roof at a local lumber facility collapsed, releasing thousands of gallons of propane, fire officials said.
The incident happened shortly after 6:30 a.m. at Turnkey Lumber Corp., when employees arriving for work noticed part of the building had given way and detected a strong propane odor. They alerted emergency responders, according to the Fitzwilliam fire officials.
Firefighters arrived to find that a portion of the roof had caved in under the weight of accumulated snow, causing propane to leak into the building. Officials estimated between 2,500 and 3,000 gallons of propane were released as a result.
According to the Fitzwilliam Fire Department, the situation could have been far more dangerous if the gas had ignited, but crews were able to secure the area without any explosions or injuries.
No one was inside the building when the collapse occurred, and no injuries were reported. The building, however, suffered substantial structural damage.
Fire officials said there was roughly 10 feet of snow on the roof at the time of the collapse.
Route 12 was closed in both directions near the site for a couple hours while crews worked to manage the propane leak and secure the scene.
Several agencies assisted at the scene, including the Keene Fire Department’s hazardous materials team and fire departments from Fitzwilliam, Keene, Richmond, Troy and Winchendon, Massachusetts.
